Genetic diversity of the xerothermic weevils Polydrusus inustus and Centricnemus leucogrammus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in central Europe

Phylogeography, genetic diversity, and demography of central European populations of two flightless xerothermic weevils, Polydrusus inustus and Centricnemus leucogrammus, were studied based on the polymorphism of three mtDNA genes (COII, CytB, and ND1). Results indicate that these xerothermic beetles may have different origins. P. inustus is a recent migrant as the parthenogenetic form has a low level of genetic diversity and lacks a geographic population structure. The pattern and signal transduction of neuronal apoptosis in the brain of the silk moth, Bombyx mori, during postembryonic life, were characterized. Peak numbers of apoptotic neurons were detected in 4 day old 4th instar larvae, 9 day old 5th instar larvae and 4 day old pupae, indicating three waves of neuronal apoptosis during postembryonic development. We examined effects of seasonality, larval food availability and larval rearing density on sperm length, sperm transfer rates and body size in the bivoltine scorpionfly Panorpa vulgaris. Males of the first annual generation were larger and had larger sperm. Comparing individuals of two summer generations showed that adult males resulting from group bred, ad libitum fed larvae were larger but had smaller sperm than males resulting from singly kept, food deprived larvae. The feeding behaviour of specialist butterflies may be affected by the mechanical and chemical characteristics of the tissues of their host-plants. Body size is a main fitness component of insect parasitoids. We assessed the potential influence of maternal size of the parasitoid wasp Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) on its ability to parasitize the different instars of Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on eggplant and cucumber. The benefits for offspring of attendant adult were investigated in the stag beetle Figulus binodulus. The initial growth rate of third-instar larva was significantly higher when the larvae were in a nest with adults compared to those in a nest without adults. The difference in growth rate is reflected in adult body size. Although the presence of adult beetle generally benefited the offspring, the adults did eat some of the larvae. A review of West Palaearctic species of the genus Eloeophila Rondani, 1856 is presented. Three species are redescribed, viz. Six species are identified in the Iteaphila setosa group [I. arundela sp. n., I. caucasica sp. n., I. italica Loew, 1873, I. kubaniensis sp. n., I. merzi sp. n., I. setosa (Bezzi, 1924)]. This species group is distributed from southern England in the west, through southern Europe and northern Africa, to the Caucasus and Middle Asia (Uzbekistan).
